Universiti Penyelidikan atau Universiti Penerbitan?

Apakah kriteria universiti penyelidikan?

Semak diri kita; adakah kita masih merdeka?

reducing greenhouse gases to slow the pace of climate change

One scientist's hobby: recreating the ice age

Wild horses have returned to northern Siberia. So have musk oxen, hairy beasts that once shared this icy land with woolly mammoths and saber-toothed cats. Moose and reindeer are here, and may one day be joined by Canadian bison and deer.

Later, the predators will come — Siberian tigers, wolves and maybe leopards.

Russian scientist Sergey Zimov is reintroducing these animals to the land where they once roamed in millions to demonstrate his theory that filling the vast emptiness of Siberia with grass-eating animals can slow global warming.

____________________________________________How Malaysia can contribute? Perhaps Milky Storks, Java and Indian Medaka and Eel Migration can help to slow the pace of climate change. Not just an ecological survey but important to number one research priority areas in Malaysia. Many high technology research sponsored by the government may contribute to nanopollution. SO think about it. More research grants should be given to green research.

Too many new doctors and too few hospitals to train them

Adopted from The Star online: Saturday November 27, 2010

Too many new doctors and too few hospitals to train them

The number of medical housemen undergoing clinical training in most government hospitals has increased and this has given rise to concern that they may not get sufficient experience.

With new medical schools opening up locally and lower fees being offered at new institutions abroad, around 4,000 Malaysian medical students are expected to graduate annually from 350 universities all over the world in the coming years.

Each specialist was supervising four times as many housemen compared to a decade ago.
Five years ago, one houseman looked after 10 patients in hospital wards at any one time but now it is one to four patients. The concern is that these interns are seeing fewer patients and hence, have fewer opportunities to carry out adequate procedures. In some hospitals, there are more housemen than patients. In the past, it was five housemen in each department but now it could be 20 to 30 for each department. Some specialists were overburdened by the workload. The ideal ratio should be one specialist supervising five housemen with one houseman taking care of 14 hospital beds depending on discipline. To help supervise housemen and reduce the burden of the specialists now, 58 contract specialists from Egypt, India and Pakistan will come soon.

Lack of experience and responsibilities may affect their attitude such as lack responsibility towards their patients, skills such as did not know how to give an accurate diagnosis and relied too much on investigative tools instead of clinical skills and getting the proper patient history.

The large numbers and training hospitals were finding it difficult to cope. There were 38 hospitals providing training to more than 3,058 housemen last year. The number increased to the current 6,253 housemen since the ministry increased the duration of housemanship from one year to two. This led to most hospitals, including those in Sabah and Sarawak, having an excess of housemen.

Hospitals that were chosen must be able to cater to six areas in which housemen need training – medical, surgical, paediatrics, obstetrics and gynaecology, orthopaedic and accident, and emergency.
______________________________________________________
May be the private hospitals bills will reduce due to high competition OR the medicine prices will be increased. Patients also may have to choose right doctors so that they do not see the poor quality doctors. When I was in school my teacher use to tell me one day the doctor will cycle from house to house with ice cream bell. because too many doctors. we need more specialist and scientists.

Sarawak shares wildlife conservation responsibility with more youngsters

The Star online Published: Saturday November 27, 2010 MYT 12:10:00 PM

SIBU: The Sarawak Forestry Corporation is to extend its Orangutan Donation Drive for Schools programme to create awareness and share the responsibility of wildlife conservation with more young people.

The programme, which started with six schools in Kuching and now encompassed 15 schools here, 16 in Miri and six in Bintulu, would also target rural schools.

The programme was "more of an awareness campaign and sharing the responsibility of wildlife conservation among the new generation rather than merely collecting contributions from them".

Measures introduced since the 1990s had kept the primate population stable, with about 2,500 individuals at the Lanjak Entimau Wildlife Sanctuary, Batang Ai National Park and Ulu Sebuyau National Park, all in the Sri Aman Division with a combined area of 250,000 hectares.

The orangutan rehabilitation programme begun in 1962 had rehabilitated 16 individuals in the Semenggoh and Matang wildlife centres, and there were now 27 individuals in Semenggoh and 18 in Matang. The process is complicated, time-consuming and expensive.

The corporation had so far collected RM605,000 from 16 corporate entities under its Orangutan Adoption programme, including from Ambank Group, the first local bank which had contributed RM300,000. The corporation targeted to collect about RM500mil from timber royalty and cess this year, including about RM115mil from the Sibu area, more than RM140mil from Miri and RM165mil from Bintulu.

On other conservation programmes are marine conservation programmes in Kuala Lawas, Limbang, and at Tanjung Datu National Park in Kuching for wildlife such as dolphins, sea turtles and dugongs.

Perhaps we can do the same thing for the Milky Storks in Kuala Gula and Matang Forest Reserve in Perak.

Future Generation Want to See Milky Stork in the wild

Only 4 Milky Storks in the wild now. Nearly 30 Milky Storks were released in stages into their natural habitat in Kuala Gula. Now 12 of them are flying around Kuala Gula. With them are 2 juveniles hatched from one of released couple. Their survival depending on public support, enforcement, monitoring, continously educating public and publicity besides protecting their habitat and continous research. A systematic programme needed if we want to conserve this birds for the future generations. Participation from all agencies especially those related to coastal mangrove ecosystem needed. Perak State Government, Pejabat Daerah Matang and Kerian, Jabatan Perhilitan, Jabatan Perhutanan, Sime Darby and others should look for the experts to help them. Universiti Putra Malaysia and Zoo Negara already working together seriously on the Milky Stork Release Programme.

Facing Future Young

Young people with new thinking.
Globalisation challenge them.
Educators profesionals and Professors must thinking far a head and advance.
Active research and fundings are needed in all fields.
Food and environment are among the important fields.
Waste management, recycle and energy are equally important.
Life style in the future needs technology and clean and safe environment.
All need advance thinking, research and fundings.

Nanopollution

Nanopollution is waste matter or byproducts of nanoscopic devices or material manufacture. Nanoscopic devices leave behind nanoparticles which can infiltrate the cells of humans, animals and all other living organisms. These particles have been proven to be able to make their way to the brain. It is believed that humans who live in urban areas are most susceptible to heavy exposure to nanopollution. The exhaust from cars, the manganese oxide from construction sites and other substances add up to tons of nanoscopoic pollution that people who live in urban areas inhale everyday.

War and Peace

War is expensive
Peace is cheap

Poor country cannot involve in war. Poor need research for food and health, quality environment to live in and quality education.

Toothache At A Glance

The most common cause of a toothache is a dental cavity.
The second most common cause of toothache is gum disease.
A toothache can be caused by a problem that does not originate from a tooth or the jaw.
What is a toothache?

"Toothache" usually refers to pain around the teeth or jaws primarily as a result of a dental condition. In most instances, toothaches are caused by tooth problems, such as a dental cavity, a cracked tooth, an exposed tooth root, or gum disease. However, disorders of the jaw joint (temporo-mandibular joint) can also cause pain that is referred to as "toothache." The severity of a toothache can range from chronic and mild to sharp and excruciating. The pain may be aggravated by chewing or by cold or heat. A thorough oral examination, which includes dental X-rays, can help determine whether the toothache is coming from a tooth or jaw problem and the cause.

Tigers could be extinct in 12 years if unprotected

Wild tigers could become extinct in 12 years if countries where they still roam fail to take quick action to protect their habitats and step up the fight against poaching, global wildlife experts told a "tiger summit" Sunday.
About 3,200 tigers remain in the wild, a dramatic plunge from an estimated 100,000 a century ago.
Their habitat is being destroyed by forest cutting and construction, and they are a valuable trophy for poachers who want their skins and body parts prized in Chinese traditional medicine.
The summit approved a wide-ranging program with the goal of doubling the world's tiger population in the wild by 2022 backed by governments of the 13 countries that still have tiger populations: Bangladesh, Bhutan, Cambodia, China, India, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Nepal, Thailand, Vietnam and Russia.
The program aims to protect tiger habitats, eradicate poaching, smuggling, and illegal trade of tigers and their parts, and also create incentives for local communities to engage them in helping protect the big cats.

Malaysia is rich in biodiversity. Many important wildlife such as tiger inhabit Malaysian forests. BUT we do not give a serious effort in conserving this animals including many others such as sunbears, rhinocerous, hornbills, milky storks, elephants...... how far their biology and ecology were studied. How much grants we provide, how many experts we recruit, how the education programme related to wildlife was conducted? We have missed a lot!

Bentuk Rebung dari Buluh?

Bakat kanak-kanak perlu dicungkil seawal sekolah rendah lagi.

2. Kailan with salted fish: Kailan, fish, salt, ...
3. In short list down all menu, ingredient, source and amount of ingredients....
4. Where and how to get the ingredients
5. Technologies of preparing the menus
6. Basically we need to think all from farm to feces or from soil to seedless.
7. If we import the menus and culture do we have to import the ingredient?
8. All food in the above picture plus tax cost nearly RM500.00
9. Was that because of services, high cost of materials used or just the price.

Lambakan Graduate ATAU Pengeluaran tenaga profesional?

FRIM declared heritage site
By ISABELLE LAI
isabellelai@thestar.com.my

KUALA LUMPUR: The Forest Research Institute Malaysia’s (FRIM) main campus in Kepong was officially declared one of the country’s natural heritage sites.

This would ensure the protection of its forest for research as well as the enjoyment of future generations.

“FRIM is the largest man-made forest in the world. Since 1962, pioneer foresters and scientists have nurtured the forest back to life from abandoned tin mining pits, and we now have over 2,500 plant species,” he said during the official declaration ceremony yesterday.

To celebrate the milestone, FRIM is set to become fully environmentally-friendly next year by banning the use of disposable polystyrene and plastic bags.

Ibadat Qurban mengeratkan komuniti dan persaudaraan

Qurbān (Arabic: قربان‎, Persian: قرباني Qorbāni) is the sacrifice of a livestock animal during Eid ul-Adha. The word form was borrowed from Hebrew qorbān "offering" and Syriac qurbānā "sacrifice". In Islam, the sacrifice of an animal is legal only during 10-12 Dhu l-Hijjah, the 12th lunar month of the Islamic calendar. It is understood as a symbolic repetition of Abraham's sacrifice of a ram in place of his son, a crucial notion in Judaism, Christianity and Islam alike.
Most schools of fiqh accept that the animal must be killed according to the prohibitions of Halal sacrifice and that the animal in question may be a goat, sheep, cow or camel.
Bersatu teguh, bercerai roboh. Teknologi memudahkan cara. Sedikit pengetahuan asas sains memudahkan banyak urusan kerja. Ibadat Qurban bukan sekadar upacara semata-mata tetapi penuh rahsia yang perlu dicungkil oleh umat manusia.

Leading Marine Scientists in Malaysia

For last 10 years the group aggressively meeting, making strategies for marine science research and collaborate with other neighbouring countries and Japanese Scientists. Hundreds of scientific publications were produced from this group. Not an easy task to gather scientists and develop together as a group solving current issues and future look of marine sciences. Malaysia as a maritime country, coastal marine sciences is very important to focus on. With current available experts in many fields of coastal marine sciences from biodiversity to pollution and from harmful algal bloom to genetic resources and changes, young scientists should pickup before the seniours are retired. The government and their agencies should look seriously on this group so that their expertise are not wasted and transferred accurately to the young generation for better marine ecosystem in the future. A proper research grants, capacity building strategies and adequate funding need to be look after.Top picture: Leading marine scientists from Malaysia and the bottom picture: scientists involve in coastal marine pollution from South East Asia and Japan.

Govt to recruit 1,000 retired English teachers
By PRIYA KULASEGARAN

KUALA LUMPUR: The Education Ministry hopes to recruit 1,000 retired English language teachers on contract basis, said Deputy Education Minister Datuk Dr Wee Ka Siong.

This, he said, is to complement the proposed employment of 375 native English speaking teachers announced in Budget 2011 recently.

__________________________________________________
Not only English; BM, Sejarah and Agama Islam are lacking too. Government should have a proper planning and succession programme of staff base on requirement (immediate, short term and long term) and situation. Similar cases go to the universities. Is it because educationist only can teach but cannot think and plan? OR they are too clever, always arguing without conclusion. OR Nowadays people do not listen/respect to academician anymore.

US researchers explain how cats lap liquids with elegance

1. US researchers on Thursday unveiled the secret of how cats lap water or milk with such elegance, a phenomenon that happens so fast it cannot be followed by human eyes.
2. Cats are among the many species that, unlike humans, cannot close their mouths and create suction.
3. With help from from high-speed video taken of a felines lapping liquid, researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Princeton University found that household cats and larger felines like tigers balance gravity and inertia as they imbibe liquids.
4. By studying the images researchers have now determined that there is no ladling effect, but instead the cat's tongue darts in and out so quickly that the action forms a column of liquid.
5. Cats, unlike dogs, aren't dipping their tongues into the liquid like ladles.
6. The smooth tip of cat's tongue barely brushes the surface of the liquid before the cat rapidly draws its tongue back up. A column of milk forms between the moving tongue and the liquid's surface. The cat then closes its mouth, pinching off the top of the column for a nice drink, while keeping its chin dry.
7. The liquid column is created by a delicate balance between gravity, which pulls the liquid back to the bowl, and inertia, which in physics, refers to the tendency of the liquid or any matter, to continue moving in a direction unless another force interferes. The cat instinctively knows just how quickly to lap in order to balance these two forces, and just when to close its mouth. If it waits another fraction of a second, the force of gravity will overtake inertia, causing the column to break, the liquid to fall back into the bowl, and the cat's tongue to come up empty.
8. Cats average about four laps per second, with each lap bringing in about 0.1 milliliters of liquid. The larger felines lap at a slower pace.

Climate Change and Global Warming Chain

The Star, Thursday November 11, 2010
Perlis and Kedah ready for monsoon

GEORGE TOWN: Perlis and Kedah have learnt valuable lessons from the heavy rain and floods that hit them over the past one week and have drawn up contingency plans to face the monsoon season.

A Perlis National Security Department spokesman said the flood operations room would be open round-the-clock and the state Welfare Department had stocked up on basic amenities such as rice, canned food and other food items.

_______________________________________________

If we study the climate change and global warming events in the world, monsoon or typhoon activities were also changed. Some countries were really affected by the events. Should we be more proactive to face this unavoidable disaster in the future. More research money should be allocated for natural disasters studies and related issues. We can search for money and researchers but we cannot change weather and its effects. May be we can try to predict. A lot more we need to learn.

Budaya Peperiksaan dan Kepentingan Diri

Kuala Selangor Nature Park: An important destination for environmental education and ecotourism

The Kuala Selangor Nature Park (KSNP), also known as Taman Alam, is a large nature sanctuary, being established since 1987 and consisting of 200 hectares of mangroves and secondary coastal forest. The park is one of the main attractions of Kuala Selangor, located at the base of Bukit Melawati. It was originally part of a greater tract of primary coastal forest, but land reclamation works have claimed all but this piece of land, now the park. KSNP provides good environment for research, ecotourism, birding, education, etc. Mangrove planting regularly done by volunteers. 10 yra old Iman from Sekolah Seri Selangor Subang Jaya learned a lot about nature at KSNP.

Stress at Work

How to Reduce and Manage Job and Workplace Stress?

In this difficult economy, you may find it harder than ever to cope with challenges on the job. Both the stress we take with us when we go to work and the stress that awaits us on the job are on the rise – and employers, managers, and workers all feel the added pressure. While some stress is a normal part of life, excessive stress interferes with your productivity and reduces your physical and emotional health, so it’s important to find ways to keep it under control. Fortunately, there is a lot that you can do to manage and reduce stress at work.

You can learn how to manage job stress
There are a variety of steps you can take to reduce both your overall stress levels and the stress you find on the job and in the workplace. These include:

Taking responsibility for improving your physical and emotional well-being.
Avoiding pitfalls by identifying knee jerk habits and negative attitudes that add to the stress you experience at work.
Learning better communication skills to ease and improve your relationships with management and coworkers.

Reducing job stress by taking care of yourself
When stress on the job is interfering with your ability to work, care for yourself, or manage your personal life, it’s time to take action. Start by paying attention to your physical and emotional health. When your own needs are taken care of, you’re stronger and more resilient to stress. The better you feel, the better equipped you’ll be to manage work stress without becoming overwhelmed.

Taking care of yourself doesn’t require a total lifestyle overhaul. Even small things can lift your mood, increase your energy, and make you feel like you’re back in the driver’s seat. Take things one step at a time, and as you make more positive lifestyle choices, you’ll soon notice a noticeable difference in your stress level, both at home at work.
