Esophageal varices are abnormal, enlarged veins in the lower part of the esophagus — the tube that connects the throat and stomach. Esophageal varices occur most often in people with serious liver diseases. Esophageal varices develop when normal blood flow to the liver is obstructed by scar tissue in the liver or a clot. Seeking a way around the blockages, blood flows into smaller blood vessels that are not designed to carry large volumes of blood. The vessels may leak blood or even rupture, causing life-threatening bleeding. A number of drugs and medical procedures can help prevent and stop bleeding from esophageal varices.

High-Impact Practices (HIPs) are techniques and designs for teaching and learning that have proven to be beneficial for student engagement and successful learning among students from many backgrounds. Through intentional program design and advanced pedagogy, these types of practices can enhance student learning and work to narrow gaps in achievement across student populations.Selected HIPs: First-Year Seminars, Common Intellectual Experiences, Learning Communities, Writing-Intensive Courses, Collaborative Assignments and Projects, Undergraduate Research, Diversity/Global Learning, Community-Based Learning, Internships, Capstone Courses and Projects.

A discussion with private companies on adopting and sponsoring activities and maintenance infrastructures in Kuala Selangor Nature Park (KSNP) as part of support to establish park as one of Ramsar Sites in the world and first in Selangor.

When we talked about 11th Malaysia Plan, we cannot just talking about infrastructure or physical development only. We cannot forget about human resource development. A proper planning need to be done and how to implement it. Time is very limited and only five years before 2020

Happy Teachers Day: every where in the world teachers are talking about the same issues; respect, appreciate, low pay, hard work, happy and enjoy.

Now we are too much focus on writing manuscript to be submitted to high impact journals, we forgot to think communication among the young scientist and meeting the seniour scientists. Conference, symposium and seminars are still relevant.

Workers day not just celebrating but to review our commitment and contribution to our institution or company and our country. At the same time we plan for future of our company. The CEO and top leaders must consult all workers in order to achieve excellence.

MyCYS: Malaysian Conference for Young Scientists to promote research culture in school. Focus in Boarding schools, Maktab Rendah Sains Mara (MRSM) and some high performance schools interested in training and competition for national and international arena. First MyCYS was last February and coming one will be in August 2015.

Studies on biodiversity in our country foreign scientists surely involve our local scientists directly or indirectly. BUT who cares! We must learn from history. About time we respect and appreciate our people.

Buang Bin Mohammed Ali, Wallace's Faithful servant and Lost Malay Scientist

Buang Bin Mohamed Ali was Alfred Russel Wallace’s companion during some of his travels in the Malay Archipellago. Not very much is known about him, apart from the information given by Wallace himself in his books, “The Malay Archipelago” and “My Life”.

Our research cannot be allowed ending in the journal and kept in the archive. The data should be analysed and used as an evidence to inform others. Agencies like District office and other departments under them are important to help to continue or benefit from the results of researches. In this case the famous Sepang River which 20 years ago nearly dead river receiving effluent from one of the big pig farms in the country.

Our drivers need a continuous education and enforcement. We are still do not enough disciplines on the road.

We can take this new initiative for research and conservation of Biodiversity and habitat in Imbak Canyon, Sabah. We need to involve young generation, we need to expose and train 1000 young students in order to get 100-200 scientists and experts on Imbak canyon. We need to plan properly from now and not just a ceremonial and decorations. We need to have a center for tropical forest in Kota Kinabalu to support Imbak Canyon, Danum Valley and Miliau Basin. Not just a show case but a center for information and a door to those tropical forest not only the tourists and scientists from all places.

We are not behind in presenting ideas, setting SOPs and managing the rice fields. BUT we have problems in coordinating farmers, managing ploughing, managing water, managing pest such as pomacea, rats, weeds and other insects and fungus. May be they are under the same roof but different management and probably not communicating between them. They probably did their jobs but not well coordinated. a continuous R&D need to be carried out. Ask universities to help.

I have been writing many issues on university's leadership for the world class university, producing quality graduates and future intellectual society. You can refer some of them by typing university leadership or world class university. After at least for the past 5 years we are talking about that and I think Malaysia still lacking in university's leaders not just the management team headed by the vice chancellor but the Board of Directors too may be blur about the university's direction and function. We have long way to go. There are ways but we are still very far for truly world class university. This is like the ways that we are looking at the jungle trail and lost by the trails built by the orang asli or wild boar trail. We need to learn fast in order to be at the world level where others are moving very fast.
