China’s imports from Malaysia surged from just 208,770 tonnes in 2013 to 962,799 tonnes in 2014. The figures from the Chinese Customs agency on the other hand recorded a higher import volume of 3.3 million tonnes. The momentum is still building with shipments from Malaysia to China recording an unprecedented volume of 4.6 million tonnes from January to April 2015.

The samples were obtained in Sungai Pengorak and Pantai Pengorak, near Kampung Selamat, where the waters had turned deep, dark red, instead of its natural green or azure hue. The photos created a buzz on social media recently, sparking concerns of a major contamination crisis. Like most ores, bauxite contains traces of metals such as arsenic, beryllium, cadmium, chromium, lead, manganese, mercury, nickel and naturally-occurring radioactive materials, such as thorium and uranium. Most of these elements remain with the residue, and that is why many countries which mine bauxite for the extraction of aluminium, do it with sound extraction, disposal and rehabilitation processes.
