JOHOR BARU: There will be no more hunting in the state, Johor Ruler Sultan Ibrahim Ibni Almar hum Sultan Iskandar decreed.

He said the ban was necessary to protect the wildlife especially protected species from decreasing or going extinct. Sultan Ibrahim said that besides tigers, the ban includes bears, deer, mousedeer, tapir and porcupines. “The poaching of these animals are so cruel. Eating one tiger claw will not make you have tiger strength for months,” he said referring to beliefs that consuming certain animal parts would help boost virility.

He stressed that if wild animals were causing a nuisance to people or farmers, they should inform the Johor Wildlife Department (Perhilitan). “We can organise shooters for wild boars or crows,” he said, adding that a meeting would be held with Perhitilitan to enforce the ruling immediately. “I want to protect the wildlife in Johor and those caught poaching should be jailed,” he told The Star in an exclusive interview at his Istana Pasir Pelangi here yesterday.

Sultan Ibrahim said he was breeding several animals like tigers, panthers and deers with the intention of releasing them into the jungle. Sultan Ibrahim has 400 deer, 12 Siberian, Indian and Bengal tigers as well as panthers. He also has six tiger cubs as a result of his breeding programme.

“I am trying to protect wildlife here including starting a rehabilitation centre for deer in central Johor,” he said, adding that he also hoped to work with the World Wildlife Foundation. Sultan Ibrahim said he had informers who would report to him if people continued hunting. He also wanted the procedures for the issuance of gun licences in the state to be tightened.

He warned those who misused their gun licences that he would not hesitate to get the authorities to revoke their licences and seize their guns. “The police must assist and conduct roadblocks in places known to be famous for hunting to ensure no one flouts the law,” he added.

Hari ini satu lagi aktiviti remaja dan alam sekitar dilaksanakan oleh Malaysian Nature Society dan ditaja bersama oleh Dewan Bandaraya Kuala Lumpur, Jabatan Alam Sekitar Malaysia, Nature Education Centre-MNS-Shell-FRIM. Aktiviti ini di jalankan di Institut Penyelidikan Perhutanan Malaysia (FRIM). Aktiviti ini adalah bagi memberikan pengetahuan, pengalaman dan amalan tentang hal-hal berkaitan alam sekitar kepada generasi muda. Program bersiri ini menantikan tajaan dan sokongan pelbagai pihak. Mungkin di lain kali aktiviti ini akan melibatkan pelajar-pelajar di IPT awam atau swasta. Turut hadir dalam majlis penutup ialah Timbalan Pengarah Dewan Bandaraya Kuala Lumpur, Ketua Pengarah FRIM dan Penasihat Jabatan Pendidikan Alam Sekitar MNS/Ahli Majlis MNS Prof. Dr. Ahmad Ismail.

Unfortunately the proposal for research grant was rejected by the Expert Panels in Malaysia! Eventhough only 4 milky storks left in their natural habitat in Malaysia, Malaysian expert still thinking and arguing should we approve research grant for milky stork research or refer to the scope of grant and country's priority. Malaysia talks a lot about biodiversity, conservation, green, eco-, climate change and global warming. By right this project should be top down and top prioty beyond the assessment of expert panels. We must be quick before we say good bye to this milky stork forever.

Getting closer to nature

WITH the community increasingly concerned about environmental conservation, Telekom Malaysia Berhad (TM) contributes its bit by embarking on a nature camp programme, specifically for its employees and aptly called “BumiKu Camp”.

BumiKu Camp, organised in collaboration with Malaysian Nature Society (MNS), has the objective of increasing awareness and knowledge on various environmental issues and concerns among TM employees.

The camp is also hoped to establish a network of employees to internally drive TM’s green efforts at their respective offices.

BumiKu Camp attracted a total of 120 participants voluntarily from TM offices nationwide.

Present at the closing ceremony were TM group chief executive officer Datuk Seri Zamzamzairani Mohd Isa and MNS Environmental Education Division board member and adviser Prof Dr Ahmad Ismail.

“BumiKu Camp is a great match between TM and MNS in achieving our shared intent, which is to educate the community on environmental issues and encourage them to participate in activities relating to environment conservation.

Where are our Research University to help?
May be to approve research grants for milky stork conservation programme for less than 5 million in 5 years and this project certainly have an international and local values is more difficult and hard to justify. Similar thing very hard to justify for a project like studying java medaka for testing and monitoring tools for environmental health. OR may be more traveling grants for research grants evaluator so that they are more expose and wider thinking on basic and fundamental science.

Basic Research in Coastal Marine Research

Recent JSPS meeting on coastal marine science still talking on the basic research on ecology and biology including the taxonomy of coastal flora and fauna.In Malaysia very advance and fundamental researches biased on the molecular levels without understandng the basic biology and ecology. Topics like habitat quality, medaka fishes and conservation of key species birds are in hot discussion. Malaysian delegates from scientists to administrators were also attended the meeting. Unfortunately the same topics submitted to government of Malaysia funder body for research grants were rejected. What when wrong? Leadership, expertise, fair and transparent, vission or university in Malaysia run by kerani or secretary. We need immediate transformation.
