Coral Triangle Countries Finalize Sustainable Fisheries Framework and Roadmap

The member countries of the Coral Triangle Initiative (CTI) have endorsed a framework and a corresponding roadmap of activities that will promote an ecosystem approach to fisheries management (EAFM) across the region. Representatives from Indonesia, Malaysia, Papua New Guinea, Philippines, Solomon Islands and Timor-Leste met on May 14-16, 2013 in Sanur, Indonesia to finalize the details of the framework and recommend it for adoption at the CTI's Senior Officials Meeting scheduled in November 2013

Coral Triangle Countries Launch Cutting Edge Climate Change Adaptation Guidebook

More than 30 representatives from the Coral Triangle Initiative (CTI) countries - Indonesia, Malaysia, Papua New Guinea, Philippines, Solomon Islands, and Timor-Leste - gathered in Dili on May 29-31, 2013 to launch a new guidebook that will help coastal communities in the region adapt to climate change. The guide called Climate Change Adaptation for Coral Triangle Communities: A Guide for Vulnerability Assessment and Local Early Action Planning (available for download at www.uscti.org) is a comprehensive set of cutting-edge scientific and social instruments that local governments and communities can use to assess their vulnerability to climate change and develop their own local action plans to address these. The guide tackles one of the major threats to the Coral Triangle's reefs. A study by US-based World Resources Institute showed that the Coral Triangle's reefs are heavily threatened by overfishing, watershed-based pollution, and coastal development that when combined with threats due to climate change, increase the risk increases to 90%. USAID US CTI Support Program provided technical and management support in developing the guide and supports its implementation in communities across the Coral Triangle.
