As a professors, easy to measure.
1. teaching and supervising the students. The students will use their knowledge and expertise developed during their students time and serve the society or the country, or may be at the international level.
2. consultation to government or public agencies on the specific field to be used by the agencies in their management or developing their new projects.
3. extension work to the public. If the professors can identify one area as a model and develop the society and technology in changing their culture, life style and productivity of the locals, this can be an important impact of their research, contribution and knowledge. All those contribution are based on long term research and knowledge development. All developed country respect the professors by giving them better salary, research grants and recognised them. Some country still practicing "Hang Nadim" culture (look at Singapura Dilanggar Todak).
