Why basic research and monitoring are important

Large-scale exploitation of wild animals and plants through fishing, hunting and logging often depends on augmentation through releases of translocated or captively raised individuals. Such releases are performed worldwide in vast numbers. Augmentation can be demographically and economically beneficial but can also cause four types of adverse genetic change to wild populations: (1) loss of genetic variation, (2) loss of adaptations, (3) change of population composition, and (4) change of population structure. While adverse genetic impacts are recognized and documented in fisheries, little effort is devoted to actually monitoring them. In forestry and wildlife management, genetic risks associated with releases are largely neglected. We outline key features of programs to effectively monitor consequences of such releases on natural population (Trends in Ecology & Evolution Volume 25, Issue 9, September 2010, Pages 520-529)

Plan to make Langkawi shine again as tourism draw

What Minister Tan Sri Nor Mohamed Yakcop said
(Published: Sunday August 8, 2010 MYT 1:35:00 PM)

1. The Federal government plans to redevelop Langkawi's tourism potential to revive the glory days of the resort island off Kedah.
2. Measures would be taken under the 10th Malaysia Plan (2011-2015) to enable Langkawi regain a prominent place on the tourism map.
3. The government would come up with a list of projects in a few months' time as part of the redevelopment plan, he said.
4. "Langkawi has a lot of potential but it is not fully utilised. There is much we can do, particularly with the attractive natural surroundings,"
5. "If Thailand can boast of Phuket, Koh Samui and Krabi, and Indonesia, of Bali, then surely Malaysia can be proud of its own islands, of which Langkawi is the most popular,"
6. The government had spent a lot in previous five-year plans to develop Langkawi's economy and had undertaken a major transformation of the island. "Nevertheless, the government is not satisfied yet. We have to spend a little more to enable Langkawi to realise its maximum potential as a tourist draw,"
7. The government might have to make available skillful tour agents who could target high-spending tourists, and added that there was a proposal to set up a tourism academy to train such manpower.
8. "We have to also resolve what seem to be small problems but which have a major impact on tourism. For example, it is said that operators of hire cars have to pay RM6,000 in insurance premiums per car annually,"
9. There had been proposals to establish a university in Langkawi as well as hospitals to cater to tourists. "We will look at these proposals. Medical tourism is important. Tourists who come for medical treatment demand well-equipped hospitals,"

Look like Langkawi will be a complete tourism destination, from nature to health tourism. BUT in the process of development a strict control on maintaining the nature and beuty of beaches, forests and traditionals. Langkawi Macam-macam ada, Langkawi Green!

Langkawi Green

Langkawi needs an urgent attention to maintain its nature. Tourists go to Langkawi for its beaches, rain forests, mangroves, wildlife and sea. Continous Environmental management and education are important to consider.
For those areas that already developed must be green and ecofriendly. Habit such as 3R (reduce, recycle and reuse) must be developed and probably Langkawi can practice no plastic bags island.

Binomial name

Gekko gecko
(Linnaeus, 1758)

The Tokay Gecko (Gekko gecko) is a nocturnal arboreal gecko, ranging from northeast India and Bangladesh, throughout Southeast Asia, Philippines to Indonesia and western New Guinea. Its native habitat is rainforest trees and cliffs, and it also frequently adapts to rural human habitations, roaming walls and ceilings at night in search of insect prey. Increasing urbanization is reducing its range. In the late 1980s and early 1990s it was introduced into Hawaii, Florida, Texas, Belize, and several Caribbean islands, where it can be considered an invasive species. The Tokay Gecko is known as a Tuko or Toko in the Philippines for its characteristic vocalizations where people have mixed feelings about it ranging from terror of the mistaken belief that its feet can tear your skin off to great love and admiration for its entertaining vocalizations. In the Philippines most people respect it and value it because it eats dangerous pests such as scorpions and giant centipedes.
Tokays are renowned for their loud vocalizations. Their mating call, a loud croak, is variously described as sounding like tokeh or gekk-gekk, where both the common and the scientific name (deriving from onomatopoeic names in Malay, Sundanese, Tagalog, or Javanese), as well as the family name Gekkonidae and the generic term gecko come from. The call is similar to the call made by Gekko smithii (Large Forest Gecko).
The Tokay is also considered the "pitbull" of the Gecko world due to the fact that when they bite, they often won't let go for a few minutes and rarely up to an hour or more, and generally difficult to remove without causing harm to the Gecko. One way of getting a Tokay to release its hold is to submerge the animal in water or settle it down, which will encourage the lizard to let go, without causing it any harm or undue stress. A less stressful method is to simply put a drop of vinegar on the gecko's nose. This is sometimes enough to get them to let go.
The Tokay Gecko is the second largest Gecko species, attaining lengths of about 30–40 cm (11–15 inches) for males, and 20–30 cm (7–11 inches) for females, with weights of 150–300g (5–10 oz). They are distinctive in appearance, with a bluish or greyish body, sporting spots ranging from light yellow to bright red. The male is more brightly coloured than the female. They have large eyes with a vertical slit pupil. Eyes are brown to greenish brown and can be orange or yellow.

Males are very territorial, and will attack other male Tokays as well as other Gecko species, as well as anything else in their territory. They are solitary and only meet during the mating season. Females lay clutches of one or two hard shelled eggs which are guarded until they hatch. Tokay Geckos feed on insects and small vertebrates. The typical lifespan is 7–10 years, however in captivity some Tokays have been known to live over 18 years
