Review Your Thought and Experiences in 2010 and Whats next?

In 2010 I have written 320 what I thought in this blog. Mainly on developing sciences through nature, research, leadership, career and future generation. Hopefully for next year in 2011 I will contribute more to prepare Malaysia in 2020. Time is running very fast. We really need right leaders at the right place and the right time. We cannot depend on the celebrities and clown any more. We must be real.

Save Kuala Langat South Forest Reserve 2011

The peat swamp functions as a reservoir for water, before releasing it to other drainage areas. It also supports unique flora and fauna. It acts as a sanctuary for several species of migratory birds from other continents and is well known for its population of jelutong, Dyera costulata. In Klang, the peat swamp in Raja Musa Forest Reserve covers 36,161 hectares, whereas in Kuala Langat there are two locations of swamps, namely the North and South Kuala Langat Forest Reserves covering 1,265 and 2,053 area of land respectively. Forest reserves and natural arboreta's are intended to preserve biological diversity and store forestry stocks for the future. Virgin forest can only be found in Kuala Langat at two locations, namely in Bukit Jugra Forest Reserve covering 40 hectares, and Compartment 26 of the South Kuala Langat Forest Reserve covering 174 hectares. The types of forest in both locations are coastal hill forest and peat swamp.

Save Langat South Forest Campaign

For more information please visit: http://www.forestry.gov.my/selangor/

Description:Langat South is a peat-swamp forest next to KLIA airport in Malaysia.

The forest is under threat from vegetable farmers and oil palm plantations companies.

In 1927, an area of 12,141 hectares were declared to be a forest reserve but illegal logging and burning has cut the forest back to around 5000 ha today.

May be we cannot see these trees anymore in the future. This forest is among few left in Selangor. Is we do not save it now, we will lost it forever. Future generation will blame us forever. Join MNS, WWF and others to save this forest. Last year, end of 2009 I was at Mangrove forest in Pulau Kalumpang Matang Forest Reserve. This year, end of 2010 I visited Kuala Langat South Forest Reserve to support conservation campaign. This is what happening now. This pictures were taken on 29 December 2010 at about 5.00 p.m.

Kenapa Lambat Ke Hadapan?

6 cancer-fighting superfoods

To reduce your risk of cancer, look no further than your fridge.

Aim for five to nine daily servings of all kinds of fruits and vegetables—especially these six superstars.

1. Broccoli

All cruciferous veggies (think cauliflower, cabbage, kale) contain cancer-fighting properties, but broccoli is the only one with a sizable amount of sulforaphane, a particularly potent compound that boosts the body's protective enzymes and flushes out cancer-causing chemicals.

Helps fight: breast, liver, lung, prostate, skin, stomach, and bladder cancers

2. Berries

All berries are packed with cancer-fighting phytonutrients. But black raspberries, in particular, contain very high concentrations of phytochemicals called anthocyanins, which slow down the growth of premalignant cells and keep new blood vessels from forming (and potentially feeding a cancerous tumor).

Helps fight: colon, esophageal, oral, and skin cancers

3. Tomatoes

This juicy fruit is the best dietary source of lycopene, a carotenoid that gives tomatoes their red hue. Lycopene was found to stop endometrial cancer cell growth in a study in Nutrition and Cancer. Endometrial cancer causes nearly 8,000 deaths a year.

Helps fight: endometrial, lung, prostate, and stomach cancers

4. Walnuts

Their phytosterols (cholesterol-like molecules found in plants) have been shown to block estrogen receptors in breast cancer cells, possibly slowing the cells' growth.

Helps fight: breast and prostate cancers

5. Garlic

Phytochemicals in garlic have been found to halt the formation of nitrosamines, carcinogens formed in the stomach (and in the intestines, in certain conditions) when you consume nitrates, a common food preservative. Women with the highest amounts of garlic in their diets had a 50 percent lower risk of certain colon cancers than women who ate the least.

Helps fight: breast, colon, esophageal, and stomach cancers

6. Beans

A black and navy beans significantly reduced colon cancer incidence in rats, in part because a diet rich in the legumes increased levels of the fatty acid butyrate, which in high concentrations has protective effects against cancer growth. Another study, dried beans particularly effective in preventing breast cancer in rats.

Helps fight: breast and colon cancers

How We can Support National Science and Technology Development in Malaysia

We cannot practice just news paper and literature review culture. Just DO It. And See What will happen. To much complain and too democratic we cannot moveMay be Majlis Profesor Negara can help.

Sex Education in School

Sex Education for the stability of the family and Society. National development started from the stability and the development of the family. So sex education not just for sexual intercourse and sexual transmitted diseases (STD), male and female relationship but more than that. That's why we need to learn about the nature, culture and religion. All these will guide us to better family, society and nationality.

NGOs especially the religion and culture related NGOs and education department must look this seriously so that Eastern culture will be maintained.

Other advice by naturalist "Love and Sex in Marriage:Sex can keep your marriage strong and lack of sex can destroy your marriage. When there are sexual problems in your marriage, there is quite possible that the two of you will separate within 12 months. Two ways to keep your sex life active is to make time for one another and to talk with each other."

Christmas

Christmas Day is celebrated as a major festival and public holiday in countries around the world, including many whose populations are mostly non-Christian. In some non-Christian countries, periods of former colonial rule introduced the celebration (e.g. Hong Kong); in others, Christian minorities or foreign cultural influences have led populations to observe the holiday. Countries such as Japan and Korea, where Christmas is popular despite there being only a small number of Christians, have adopted many of the secular aspects of Christmas, such as gift-giving, decorations and Christmas trees. Notable countries in which Christmas is not a formal public holiday include People's Republic of China, (excepting Hong Kong and Macao), Japan, Saudi Arabia, Algeria, Thailand, Nepal, Iran, Turkey and North Korea. Christmas celebrations around the world can vary markedly in form, reflecting differing cultural and national traditions.

Among countries with a strong Christian tradition, a variety of Christmas celebrations have developed that incorporate regional and local cultures. For Christians, participating in a religious service plays an important part in the recognition of the season. Christmas, along with Easter, is the period of highest annual church attendance. In Catholic countries, the people hold religious processions or parades in the days preceding Christmas. In other countries, secular processions or parades featuring Santa Claus and other seasonal figures are often held. Family reunions and the exchange of gifts are a widespread feature of the season. Gift giving takes place on Christmas Day in most countries.

How about Malaysia as a multi-religion, multi-cultural and multi-race? historically we live in harmony, respect each other and tolerance. New emerging of ONE Malaysia concept, interfaith conflict and fundamentalist and extremist hopefully will maintain the harmonious living in Malaysia. Even though less than 10% of Christians in Malaysia, we celebrate holiday as other dominant race and religion in Malaysia. That is Malaysian Society.

Apaka kata Majlis Profesor Negara.

Dah lama kita perlu ramai saintis negara: Apa Peranan Majlis Profesor Negara Kluster Sains dan Matematik

10. Majlis Profesor Negara juga perlu menyumbang.

Budaya Kepimpinan

Siapa patut menjadi ketua?

Climate Change?

Thousands stranded, heavy snowfall closes Europe's airports.

HEAVY snow and freezing temperatures shut down European runways yesterday, delaying or cancelling flights in several major cities.

Among the severely hit were the world’s busiest passenger airports like London’s Heathrow, Paris’ Charles de Gaulle, Frankfurt and Amsterdam’s Schiphol, leaving thousands stranded in the terminals. At Frankfurt airport, Germany's biggest, more than 500 flights were canceled Sunday out of a planned total of 1,330 departures and arrivals.

Temperatures dipped to below -20 C (-4 F) in some parts of Scandinavia, where meteorologists warned snow was piling up on the icy roads following heavy snowfall and strong winds. some parts of London could see a foot (30cm) of snow, while northern England and the Pennines could see as much as 20 inches (50cm) - made worse by strong winds which will cause snow to drift.

Lady Gaga's canceled concerts in Paris had already been rescheduled. Even the English Premier League was not spared, when heavy snow and freezing temperatures all but wiped out the fixture list and put the title race on ice. Soccer games in England, Scotland, France and the Netherlands were called off as a result of the conditions, including a high-profile match scheduled for Sunday in London between Chelsea and Manchester United. Many MU fans in Malaysia frustrated and those who trapped in traffic jam at North-South PLUS Highway yesterday were relieved.

The domino effect of disruption to services could continue for some days to come. Heavy snow has fallen across large parts of the UK, disrupting travel, dangerous driving and closing thousands of schools. ___________________________________
Whats next?
Melting snow, heavy rain and frozen ground have caused flooding in much of England, Scotland and Wales. Flooding is possible this weekend from heavy rain and snow melting in slightly warmer temperatures, the Environment Agency has warned. Accident of slipped on ice and caused death, broken bones etc. Budget, cost and related issues.

Why?

Climate change not resulted immediately after environmental effects. It will take long time sometime human can forget and cannot be predicted. They are not even localised. It is a global issues. Scientists and ecologists can advice you. So just listen to them. If you do not listen, I am very sorry.

Young doctors still unprepared to serve where they are needed

Young doctors still unprepared to serve where they are neededBy K. ASHRAF KAMMED

Many young doctors are still not prepared for the challenge to serve where the need is. Most want to be in big centres and many would appeal when posted to hospitals outside the Klang Valley or capital cities

The doctor per population ratio had improved from 1 doctor to 8,229 populations in 1957 to a ratio of 1 doctor to 927 populations in 2009, but numbers alone were not meaningful without considering the distribution factor.

There is still inequitable distribution of doctors between the public and private sector where most are in the urban areas and in some clinics at rural areas of Sabah and Sarawak, they are still manned by medical assistants.

VISIONARY LEADERSHIP

Visionary leaders are the builders of a new dawn, working with imagination, insight, and boldness.

A visionary may dream wonderful visions of the future and articulate them with great inspiration. A visionary is good with words. But a visionary leader is good with actions as well as words, and so can bring his/her vision into being in the world, thus transforming it in some way. More than words are needed for a vision to take form in today’s world. It requires leadership and heartfelt commitment.

A visionary leaders should have:

1. A COMMITMENT TO CORE SPIRITUAL VALUES: A commitment to values is an outstanding characteristic of all visionary leaders. They embody a sense of personal integrity, and radiate a sense of energy, vitality and will. Will is standing in a spiritual state of being. Will is a spiritual attribute, which allows a leader to stand for something. A commitment to values is an outstanding characteristic of all visionary leaders. 2. A CLEAR, INSPIRATIONAL VISION: Visionary leaders transmit energy to people, giving them a new sense of hope and confidence in achieving the vision and work to create a better world.
3. RESPECTFUL, EMPOWERING RELATIONSHIPS: Visionary leaders promote a partnership approach and create a shared sense of vision and meaning with others. They exhibit a greater respect for others and carefully develop team spirit and team learning.
4. INNOVATIVE, COURAGEOUS ACTION: Visionary leaders are especially noted for transforming old mental maps or paradigms, and creating strategies that are “outside the box” of conventional thought. Visionary leaders anticipate change and are proactive, rather than reactive to events. Their focus is on opportunities, not on problems.

In this Third Millennium, thousands of new visionary leaders are emerging in all fields of human endeavor around the world, leading a quiet revolution energized by power of the soul. By appreciating and supporting those who lead from their core spiritual values, we strengthen those leadership qualities in ourselves.

Experts in Biodiversity and Pollution are continuously needed

The Star: Friday December 17, 2010
No turning back to agro-base economy: Environmental Pollution continuously relevance
Malaysia should not go back to an agriculture-based economy because the country would not be able to achieve the economic growth that the Government desires and overcome unemployment, said former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
We can still give attention to agriculture because it is making advances in terms of technology and we cannot neglect that. But to depend entirely on agriculture will not be productive.
He said that even with modern agriculture, the Government would still not be able to create enough jobs for the people.
That is why we have switched to industrial-based economy but to do that, we must equip our people with necessary knowledge and skills.

Decision Making: Why we need profesional to lead?

The Star: Friday December 17, 2010
Make changes when needed, Najib reminds civil servants

Civil servants must be brave to make changes to conditions and regulations which are found to hinder government-initiated plans from being executed effectively. Making changes to certain rules and regulations did not mean they were wrong. Therefore, civil servants must have the courage to make changes (to conditions and regulations).
The flawless execution is not only the responsibility of operating ministries but also involves central agencies like the Finance Ministry.

Look East Policy: values and success

India's "Look East" Policy, which was initiated in 1991, marked a strategic shift in India’s perspective of the world. It was developed and enacted during the government of Prime Minister P.V. Narasimha Rao and rigorously pursued by the successive governments of Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Manmohan Singh.
This is in keeping with the philosophy of the Look East policy of India finding its destiny by linking itself more and more with its Asian partners to engage the rest of the world, and that India’s future and economic interests are best served by greater integration with East and Southeast Asia.
Look East policy is an attempt to forge closer and deeper economic integration with its eastern neighbours as a part of the new realpolitik in evidence in India’s foreign policy, and the engagement with Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) is a part of the recognition on the part of India’s elite of the strategic and economic importance of the region to the country’s national interests.
India Look East policy is not merely an external economic policy; it is also a strategic shift in India’s vision of the world and India’s place in the evolving global economy.
_______________________________________
The “Look East” policy introduced by former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad in 1982 has been an important factor for the success of the programme to send Malaysians to study in Japan
The policy had resulted in 2,986 UM graduates furthering their studies and undergoing training in Japan to emulate Japan’s work ethics and business techniques. Under the policy, Malaysia strengthened its cooperation with Japan in the economic, industrial, technological training, academic, research and management fields.
The success of the policy prompted the Japanese government to increase the intake of Malaysian students in universities in Japan.

_________________________________________________
The Nibiru collision is a supposed disastrous encounter between the Earth and a large planetary object (either a collision or a near-miss) which certain groups believe will take place in the early 21st century. Believers in this doomsday event usually refer to this object as Planet X or Nibiru. The idea that a planet-sized object could possibly collide with or pass by Earth in the near future is not supported by any scientific evidence and has been rejected as pseudoscience by astronomers and planetary scientists.

The idea was first proposed in 1995 by Nancy Lieder, founder of the website ZetaTalk. Lieder describes herself as a contactee with the ability to receive messages from extra-terrestrials from the Zeta Reticuli star system through an implant in her brain. She states that she was chosen to warn mankind that the object would sweep through the inner Solar System in May 2003 (though that date was later abandoned) causing Earth to undergo a pole shift that would destroy most of humanity. The predicted collision has subsequently spread beyond Lieder's website and has been embraced by numerous internet doomsday groups, most of which link the event to the 2012 phenomenon. Although the name "Nibiru" is derived from the works of ancient astronaut writer Zecharia Sitchin and his interpretations of Babylonian and Sumerian mythology, Sitchin himself denied any connection between his work and various claims of a coming apocalypse.

International Year of Forests 2011

The year 2011 was declared the International Year of Forests by the United Nations to raise awareness and strengthen the sustainable forest management, conservation and sustainable development of all types of forests for the benefit of current and future generations.

Forests are an integral part of global sustainable development. According to World Bank estimates, more than 1.6 billion people depend on forests for their livelihoods. The forest product industry is a source of economic growth and employment, with global forest products traded internationally in the order of $270 billion.

The UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) estimates that every year 130,000 km square of the world's forests are lost due to deforestation. Conversion to agricultural land, unsustainable harvesting of timber, unsound land management practices, and creation of human settlements are the most common reasons for this loss of forested areas.

According to the World Bank, deforestation accounts for up to 20 percent of the global greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to global warming. FAO data estimates that the world's forests and forest soil store more than one trillion tons of carbon – twice the amount found in the atmosphere.

The World Bank estimates that forests provide habitats to about two-thirds of all species on earth, and that deforestation of closed tropical rainforests could account for biodiversity loss of as many as 100 species a day.

According to the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and the Global Partnership on Forest Landscape Restoration, “Across the globe lie more than a billion hectares of lost and degraded forest land that could be restored”.

The Secretariat of the United Nations Forum on Forests is the focal point for implementation of the International Year in collaboration with Governments, the Collaborative Partnership on Forests and other relevant organizations and processes.

Governments, regional and international organizations and civil society organizations are expected to create national committees and designate focal points in their respective countries to facilitate organization of activities in support of the International Year of Forests.

Biodiversity and Climate Change Issues in Malaysia

Despite we have many policies, laws, many government departments and ministries concerning biodiversity and climate change, the workshop attended by professors and researchers still not satisfied with the research findings, research grant allocated and government concerned. Why? May be less political power. I have said earlier in my blog, now the environmental issues no more scientists problems but already becoming a political issues. Public already educated enough on the environmental problems and they demand solution from the politician not the scientists. Therefore in the megabiodiversity country like Malaysia, research and information on biodiversity is very important. Tahniah kepada penganjur workshop ini.

Healthy Living: 4 Ballet Moves For A Beautiful Body

1. Lengthen Your Bod
Stretching before and after every workout keeps muscles supple and helps elongate the lines of limbs. Begin by lying on your back and bringing your leg above you, pulling the ankle gently toward your head. Work toward stretching your knee all the way straight over time. Change legs.

2. Be Ab-Fab:
The center of balance is everything—creating a strong center of balance begins with building strong abdominal muscles. Lie on your back with your knees slightly bent and the arms open wide in second position. Lift the body up, contracting the abs as you close the arms to first position—a wide yet graceful circle with the hands—just above the abdomen. Pull the stomach in, closing and opening the arms as you lift up and lower. Repeat 30 times.

3. Firm Your Behind
To work on your derrière, begin on your hands and knees and make sure you have plenty of cushion underneath. Bring one knee into your chest and then extend the leg straight back, into arabesque. Stretch the knee all the way and be sure to pull in through your stomach. Repeat 30 times, then change legs.

4. Tone Those Arms!
Sitting down on the mat, extend your legs out straight and place your hands just behind your hips, with the fingers facing the outer edge of the mat. Lift your hips off the mat as you stretch the elbows, keeping your chest open and your neck long. Pull your stomach in tight and then bend the elbows slightly. Repeat this 30 times.

Tun Mahathir commented on rubbish in Malaysia: For Many Years and Thousand times talking the same thing. How are we going to respons?

1. It is reported that Malaysia produces 94,000 tons of rubbish per day or 34,310,000 tons per year.

2. I suppose a substantial portion of this must be produced by Greater Kuala Lumpur (population of about 5.5 million).

3. Population wise Greater KL has about 20 per cent of Malaysia's population. Therefore Greater KL's production of rubbish is approximately seven million tons per year.

4. What can we do with 7 million tons of rubbish. Well, we can throw it on the road outside our houses, or in the drain and rivers. In no time all our drains and rivers will be clogged up and water will overflow and flood the land. The health of the people will be at risk.

5. We can collect the rubbish and bury in a designated area. With 7 million tons a year we will be needing more and more land, and land in Greater KL is expensive. To use the land again the rubbish has to be dug and removed to another place for burial.

6. Alternatively we can have a rubbish mountain and people can go there to scrounge for any useful item. Probably the mountain of rubbish will be burnt slowly and pollute the atmosphere.

7. We can if we like, burn the rubbish behind our houses. One house doing this would be okay. But when everyone does this in KL the smoke would not only cause a haze to hang over KL, but the smell would be quite unbearable.

8. Again we can collect the rubbish and burn it in an incinerator. But no community wants to have the incinerator located anywhere near them. We must find a place where no one is living there. Look around Greater KL and you cannot find a piece of land far enough from any community to site the incinerator.

9. If you do find it would be so far away that he cost of transporting the rubbish would be a drain on the finances of City Hall. Maybe the rubbish producers should pay a special fee for rubbish disposal. I don't think anyone would agree to that. It's not the Malaysian way to pay what we can get for free.

Future Tourism in Malaysia: Are We Ready for the world-class talents for Malaysia’s economic transformation

The Star on line: Saturday December 11, 2010
Malaysia is top spot for Japanese

Malaysia is the number one choice for Japanese tourists since 2006, according to statistics from Long Stay Foundation, and this is expected to continue this year.

Japanese Ambassador to Malaysia Masahiko Horie, who revealed this yesterday, said that the Malaysia My Second Home (MM2H) programme had drawn Japanese tourists for long-stay visits, especially retirees.

Japanese people love the warm climate, good food, cheaper cost of living, and social and political stability in Malaysia.

MM2H allows foreigners who fulfill certain criteria to stay in Malaysia on a 10-year multiple entry social visit pass.

Besides retirees, the ambassador said that high school graduates make up a large number of tourists here. Japan is a homogeneous country and students should explore the world and see multi-ethnic places like Malaysia. The growing human exchange will boost bilateral trade between Malaysia and Japan. Bilateral academic exchange also needed so that we can transfer technology, culture, ethics together with money exchange. OR we just want to be like other tourism countries.

Lost Civilization May Have Existed Beneath the Persian Gulf

Veiled beneath the Persian Gulf, a once-fertile landmass may have supported some of the earliest humans outside Africa some 75,000 to 100,000 years ago, a new review of research suggests.

At its peak, the floodplain now below the Gulf would have been about the size of Great Britain, and then shrank as water began to flood the area. Then, about 8,000 years ago, the land would have been swallowed up by the Indian Ocean.

Early human groups were living around the Gulf basin throughout the Late Pleistocene. Human occupation during the Paleolithic, or early Stone Age, of the now-submerged landmass, scientists would need to find any evidence of stone tools scattered under the Gulf, As for the Neolithic, it would be wonderful to find some evidence for human-built structure.
some fossils of the anatomically modern humans some 100,000 years old found in South Arabia."
There's a hint of mythology. "Nearly every civilization living in southern Mesopotamia has told some form of the flood myth. While the names might change, the content and structure are consistent from 2,500 B.C. to the Genesis account to the Qur'anic version.

PhD thesis

What are the issues in evaluating PhD thesis?

1. Format
2. Basic technical error i.e. typing, etc.
3. Clear objectives, experimental design, methodology, discussion towards conclusion.
4. Examiners cannot be the supervisor. Examiners evaluate thesis based on the presentation in the thesis by the candidates. Candidates have to show that they understand what they presented in the thesis.
5. Regulation must be followed by the students and the authority before thesis reach the examiners. The examiners may need to evaluate the thesis content NOT the technical errors such as typing errors, language, general format, references, etc.

Internalisation of the University and KPI Dilemma

Sunday September 26, 2010
The KPI dilemma
Stories by HARIATI AZIZAN, RICHARD LIM and JOSEPH LOH
sunday@thestar.com.my

Even as the debate on the relevance of world rankings to our public universities rages on, a third rankling argument has emerged: the race to be counted in international tables may be turning our institutions into research mills.

According to some local academics, the pressure to publish research papers – an important facet of the KPI in public universities – is creating an unhealthy intellectual culture.

Publication alone is not enough. Teaching and supervising of students, attending conferences and seminars, extension and dissemination of knowledge and new findings to the public (among others) make an academician complete. A lecturer must develop areas of knowledge and then teach it to students, and not rely on textbooks alone

That said, high-impact journal publications are definitely a necessity in the age of globalisation and their significance is made even more prominent given that Malaysia aims to be a regional education hub and a player in the global knowledge economy scene. the critical research presence of Malaysian universities is virtually non-existent internationally. The 3rd International symposium on Oryzias fish, Universiti Putra Malaysia, 10-11 November 2011

THE 3rd INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM OF ORYZIAS FISH
“Important tool for molecular biology to environmental sciences”
Universiti Putra Malaysia, 10-11 November 2011

INVITATION

The International Symposium of Oryzias Fish is a meeting for all scientists involved in scientific studies of various biological aspects of the medaka fishes of the genus Oryzias and related species. A variety of studies on Japanese medaka has not only established the species as an excellent model animal for experimental organisms but also opened a new era for the wide range of research of at least 20 different Oryzias species distributed in Asia. The presence of well-defined species groups inhabiting various environments is a unique and important advantage of the medaka fishes over other model animals, making it possible to analyze speciation, evolution, biogeography, development, adaptation, and effects of pollutants, from various viewpoints including molecular biology, behavioral biology, ecology, ecotoxicology and environmental sciences,
It is our pleasure to organize a meeting concerning the Oryzias species in Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) Serdang Selangor, Malaysia. We cordially invite you to participate in this meeting to exchange the latest information and ideas, and continue our collaborations on Oryzias fishes in the form of Asian Medaka Association (AMA), multilateral or bilateral research collaboration.

Cats & Human

The cat (Felis catus), also known as the domestic cat or housecat to distinguish it from other felines and felids, is a small furry domesticated carnivorous mammal that is valued by humans for its companionship and for its ability to hunt vermin and household pests. Cats have been associated with humans for at least 9,500 years, and are currently the most popular pet in the world. Owing to their close association with humans, cats are now found almost everywhere on Earth.
Cats are similar in anatomy to the other felids, with strong, flexible bodies, quick reflexes, sharp retractable claws, and teeth adapted to killing small prey. As nocturnal predators, cats use their acute hearing and ability to see in near darkness to locate prey. Not only can cats hear sounds too faint for human ears, they can also hear sounds higher in frequency than humans can perceive. This is because cats' usual prey (particularly rodents such as mice) make high frequency noises, so cats' hearing has evolved to pinpoint these faint high-pitched sounds. Cats rely more on smell than taste, and have a vastly better sense of smell than humans.
Cats are known for their cleanliness, spending many hours licking their coats. The cat's tongue has backwards-facing spines about 500 micrometres long, which are called papillae. These are quite rigid, as they contain keratin. These spines allow cats to groom themselves by licking their fur, with the rows of papillae acting like a hairbrush. Some cats, particularly longhaired cats, occasionally regurgitate hairballs of fur that have collected in their stomachs from grooming. These clumps of fur are usually sausage-shaped and about two to three centimeters long. Hairballs can be prevented with remedies that ease elimination of the hair through the gut, as well as regular grooming of the coat with a comb or stiff brush.

Study: Electronic cigarettes pose health risks

Electronic cigarettes, which are increasingly used worldwide, are said to be unsafe and pose health risks, a new study suggests, reported China's Xinhua news agency.

Some people believe that e-cigarettes are a safe substitute for conventional cigarettes.

Batteries, atomizers, cartridges, cartridge wrappers, packs and instruction manuals lack important information regarding e-cigarette content, use and essential warnings; e-cigarette cartridges leak, which could expose nicotine, an addictive and dangerous chemical, to children, adults, pets and the environment.

Currently, there are no methods for proper disposal of e-cigarettes products and accessories, including cartridges, which could result in nicotine contamination from discarded cartridges entering water sources and soil, and adversely impacting the environment; and the manufacture, quality control, sales, and advertisement of e-cigarettes are unregulated

World Class University

May be some universities have forgotten about world class university when they are busy with high impact factor journal, commercialisation of products, patenting findings and winning competitions.
In the process of globalisation, internationalisation and lifting towards the world class university, local universities need to be very careful in appointing leaders from the bottom coordinators, head departments, deans, directors. etc. Not just cash and carry. May be need to be selected seed, germinate, grow, pruning and harvest.

Early Exposure in Recent Advance Research in Biology

Eight Kolej Mara Kuala Nerang were exposed to a recent advance research in biology for one month. This short research attachment as part of their mobility programme in IPTA. All these students are among the special candidate to study abroad.

This programme is good and can be used as part of Nobel laureates programme in Malaysia. Unfortunately the activities was not organised properly. MARA, Kolej Mara and IPTA should play roles in this activities and utilise all one month to prepare them as a good researchers in the future.

How to get an international grants such as from EU?
1. Develop yourself with good research and publications
2. Develop contact with good researchers in EU
3. Develop common interest
4. Foreign researchers will collaborate in subjects that they are interested
5. Willing to support and help them.

BUT

Why we need their grants?

To transfer our data overseas?
To gain technologies?

OR

we can use our local grants to develop our own research. Just give small money to all researchers, priority topics to the right persons/groups and top down grants to identified capable groups and right leadership.

Special grants to a young researcher and guided by a seniour professors, develop their capabilities, networking and support them with effective monitoring system.
