Kalau benar memang menakutkan graduan sekarang dalam mencari pekerjaan. Tapi saya pernah berjumpa graduan lain yang kerja membersihkan dusun dan kerja landskap, tapi pendapatannya 20-30 ribu sebulan. Terlupa nak ambil gambar dia masuk surat khabar.

Golden Appel Snails (Pomacea) problems continues. Why farmers do not make noise? OR the solve their owm problems.

Golden Apple Snails: A Food Turns Sour

KUCHING - The Golden Apple snails (siput gondang emas) were brought into Sarawak from Kalimantan by a Long Balai resident in Ba Kelalan, in the north of the state, to be bred for food in early 1997.
But the food was found to be a pest when it destroyed 239 hectares of padi at Ba Kelalan and Long Semadoh in Lawas district and Bario in Baram district, areas well known for its rice crop.
"That snail poses a serious threat to padi farmers in Sarawak," said an angry William Chang, the state agriculture director.
He is angry because he knows of the thousands of hectares of padi destroyed by the snails in other countries like Taiwan, Japan, Thailand, Philippines and Indonesia.
The Golden Apple snails had, since 1986, destroyed 171,000 hectares of padi in Taiwan costing RM320 million and 131,000 hectares in the Philippines where rice production was reported to have dropped by 40 percent.
The snail, a native of South America, had damaged 5,000 hectares of padi land in Sabah and 700 hectares in the penisula at one time.
According the April issue of "Berita Peladang", the Agriculture Department's newsletter, the Golden Apple snail is a hardy creature that can breed rapidly in rivers or any water-logged areas.
The snail, which has a three-year life cycle, can survive in harsh conditions like a long dry spell or drought.
A female snail lays 2,000 to 3,000 eggs a year, in clutches of 400 to 500 eggs that hatch in seven to 14 days.
Five days after hatching, the snails measuring two millimetre in diametre take on a golden hue and will start feeding on young padi plants.
The snails mature in 75 to 90 days, changing its colour to dark brown while the female can start laying eggs when two months' old. This ability to breed within a relatively short span of time, makes the creature a much hated pest.
A bunch of golden gondang snails eggs totalling between 400 to 500 and they can hatch within 7 to 14 days.
Depending on its numbers, these snails are known to munch through a hectare of padi in a night.
An agricultural officer of the state agriculture department who declined to be identified, said the snails would attack the base of the padi plants first, before moving on to the stems and leaves.
A grown-up snail can finish off a padi leave in three to five minutes and they are very active at twilight, night and dawn.
"A padi field that is badly destroyed by the snails is evidenced by the bits and pieces of the rice seedlings floating on the surface of the field," he said.
The state agriculture department has rushed its officers to the ground when the first report of the damage caused by these snails was received in September 1998.
"We view the attack by these snails seriously and for us, even a single Golden Apple snail detected in a padi field is a grave threat because the snails can breed so rapidly," said the officer.
As such, the department has drawn up several measures to make sure that the snails do not cause extensive damage to the rice crop in the state.
Among the measures is spraying the infected areas with a pesticide known as "Tea-seed Cake Powder" and "Bayluscide".
The department also holds dialogue with farmers, print and distribute posters to inform the people of the danger posed by the snails and organise "gotong royong" for the rural folks to seek and destroy the pests.
Other means of destroying the snails are to set up traps in rivers, to plant wood or sticks in the snails to lay their eggs which can then be destroyed.
Breeding ducks or catfish in the field can also control the pests as the snails are food to the ducks and fish.
The department agriculture has doubled up its enforcement of the quarantine regulations to make sure that people do not move or transport these snails from place to place.
Under Section 19 of the Plant Quarantine Act 1976, it is an offence to carry or transfer the Golden Apple snails which are considered a dangerous pest in Sarawak. - Bernama

Why we put politic first not education to prepare nation for developed country. All know that english is important for learning sciences BUT we keep arguing for more that ten years. WHY? Are we serious about teaching and learning sciences in schools.

Time is running out. So stop arguing and just do it. Malaysian have to move forward. Science education is very important not just to be an  Engineers and Doctors but more sciectists

Science is always important and every developing and developed countries need scientists. Malaysian also struggling for science education. academy Science Malaysia too aggressively promoting science BUT may be like meriam buluh. We need more!

TOP Scientists from abroad may be can advice but we have to work for it and united. In Malaysia Malay still like to read literature, religion and history and this make they are behind compared to the other Malaysian. In fact in Al Quran we can read a lot of sciences, why not those who are interested to study religion look into this.

if we have good quality leaders, less corruption, competitive business and strong consume right we will have quality life and less cheated society. May be scientists need to help customer by developing simple testing machine or scaner

The promise not always right same to customer not always lucky

Eid Al-adha: an annual celebration by all muslim together with millions of muslim in Mecca.

Eid al-Adha

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Eid al-Adha (Arabic: عيد الأضحى‘Īd al-’Aḍḥá, IPA: [ʕiːd al ʔadˁˈħaː], "festival of sacrifice"), also called Feast of the Sacrifice, the Major Festival, the Greater Eid and Id-ul-Zuha, is an important 4-day religious holiday celebrated by Muslims worldwide to honor the willingness of the prophet ʾIbrāhīm (Abraham) to sacrifice his young firstborn son Ismā'īl (Ishmael)a as an act of submission to God, and his son's acceptance of the sacrifice before God intervened to provide Abraham with a ram to sacrifice instead.
Eid al-Adha is the latter of the two Eid holidays celebrated by Sunni and Shia Muslims, the former holiday being Eid al-Fitr. The basis for the Eid al-Adha comes from the 196th verse of the 2nd sura of the Quran. The word "Eid" appears once in the 5th sura of the Quran, with the meaning "solemn festival". The 3 days and 2 nights of Eid al-Adha are celebrated annually on the 10th, 11th and 12th day Dhu al-Hijjah (ذو الحجة), the twelfth and last month of the lunar Islamic calendar. In the international Gregorian calendar, the dates vary from year to year, drifting approximately 11 days earlier each year.
Like Eid al-Fitr, Eid al-Adha begins with a Sunnah prayer of two rakats followed by a sermon (khuṭbah). Eid al-Adha celebrations start after the descent of the Hajj from Mount Arafat, a hill east of Mecca. Ritual observance of the holiday lasts until sunset of the 12th day of Dhu al-Hijjah. Eid sacrifice may take place until sunset on the 13th Day. The days of Eid have been singled out in the Hadith as "days of remembrance. The days of Tashriq are from the Fajr of the 9th of Dhul Hijjah upto the Asr of the 13th of Dhul Hijjah (5 days and 4 nights). This equals 23 prayers: 5 on the 9th-12th which equal 20 and 3 on the 13th.

Team building for science students: Environmental Camp or "sukan rakyat" (main kepit bola, kepit chopstick,...)

In the environmental camp many activities of interaction, communication, debating, exchange ideas and respect involved. So it is about time we change our mind set to understand nature, arguing about conservation and habitat protection. In the process the team will be formed and later we can develop a good spirit for workers.

Children development starts from early ages and good exposure: no other place rather than university. Professors children need to be exposed at early age so that their children can perform better for future generation. Not bias but reality.

UPM has done this since 30 years a go BUT why now we say its good? waiting for somebody to recognised it and say it good then we say its good? This is university not ........ we need to move forward! beyond ordinary peoples thinking.

Ekologi taik gajah: it was discussed 30 years a go. this is good for research and understand human behaviour. Some people like what happening in taik gajah. All insects and fungus competing and eating each other until no more taik. Why they compete? for complete decomposition. or nor other choices just taik gajah? Probably we need to look for other oppportunities rather than concentrationg decomposting same taik gajah.

KPT wujud dua program tingkat kebolehpasaran graduan

Utusan Malaysia: PUTRAJAYA 23 Okt.

WE can imagine how much money going out of our country because of unnecessary demand for foreign workers. Do we really need maid, guard and some workers? How science and technology can help? Malaysia too rich to disuss this.

To develop science especially on the basic sciences and biodiversity, we need a team effort. If you are working individually we will miss to protect and conserve the biodiversity (species, ecology and genetic) because the development are very fast and this involve business man, politician, engineers, architect, and those who want money and locations/space.

Cultural annihilation accompanies this destruction; approximately 70 percent of Sarawak's two million inhabitants are Indigenous and forest-dependent people, whose way of life and Native Customary Rights are extinguished along with their forests. Another extremely worrying trend is the push for oil palm plantations for biofuels. Both the Malaysian National Biofuel Policy and the European Strategy on Biofuels now focus on the substitution of petroleum for their transport sector. Now we can think of algae as a source for biofuel then we can save the forest.

FOW or Festival of wings oe Pesta Sayap is an annual event. Many students and birds lovers come to Kuala Selangor Nature Park to observe birds. At this time we can see thousands of migratory birds on the coastal mudflats during low tide and in Kuala Selangor Nature Parks during high tight. Do not miss this important event.

We cannot just watching the birds but we need to do research too. Interested agencies should support the researcher all over the world to study migratory shore birds because they can tell us  a lot about the environment. Thank you for the pictures.

Salaries for lecturers must be fair and no question or comparison with othes if we like to have effective delivery on quality knowledge, research and human resource products. We need to maintain the quality and freedom of lecturers and demand for quality output.

Lecturers job now is very challenging. They need to give first hand knowledge and latest information. All information available at finger tips. Therefore research is a must. Lecturers doing research, looking for latest information, teaching and disseminating knowledge to public.

Many agencies are competing for green. Universities suppose to be the greeners because they are educated people in campus, teaching and research about green technology, green practice such as recycle, save electricity and water, less papers, environmental education and extension programmes, and many more...

How many offices practice recycle papers, save electricity and water, managing chemical wastes, recycle bottles and cans, managing good landscape, no smoking environment, compost fertiliser....

Full of hope from our leaders; they have done their part and worries about the new generations; current leadership must inherit the old spirit to continue our strentgh in maintaining culture, values and continue to develop

Remind, advise, ideas and telling all involve for better generation. What are doing now? is it according to the vision and mission of the university?

'MESYM Malaysia Environmental Sustainability Youth Movements' vs 'Youth Environmental Expo' 24 November 2012 vs ‘Youth be Aware Workshop – Health and Environment’ – 26-29 Nov 2012

Our Leaders between dreaming, thinking, pretenting or actoring not leading. Thats why we need transfomation

In November 2010, I already organised tourist guide for UPM's  students and staff. The idea was to make UPM as one of the tourism destination for foreign tourists, part of Putrajaya trips. UPM can offer agrotourism and nature on campus. BUT interesting thing to day the tourism minister came to UPM and talked about the same thing.  Few seniour officers of UPM came to talk to me, what the minister said was a brilliant idea and she want to do it immediately. Seconds after that she turn to me and said "how about you? you like to join me?" I said, I already done it in 2010. ???!!! we have brilliant and proactive leaders?

Leaders are scared of ideas. They usually stay away from those like to talk to them and give new ideas. They fell challenged!!

Especially those who have great ideas. This is a great barrier for the local leaders

How far Polar Bear worries about their habitat. If they know will be like this, why they do not do something now? OR ask for human help!

May be Polar Bear need to discuss with Penguin

If we can calculate how much is the value of each students and convert to Ringgit Malaysia, how much we should pay to the lecturers or graduate generators.

Sometime we forgot to value the lecturers functions and put the right cost. Teachers in schools teaching A, B, C but their student go to the secondary schools , High school teachers teaching their students for preparation going to the university. Lecturers develop students for their intellectual, maturity, professional and getting their good job and high pay. higher pay then their lecturer. Every body play roles at their level and cost. BUT low pay lecturers will run away working with their former students.

Convocation: annual event to celebrate and award the degrees to the students. How far the students, university, societies, ministry and country appreciate the lecturers contribution in producing intellects and professionals. May be just pay the lecturers to teach, think and guide the students. Is there any other values? Thinking, expertise, experience, skills,........ no values? all developed countries give high pay to the lecturers and support with basic research grants and competitive grants.

Science, biodiversity, creatures and nature; A lot more things we do not know what is in the dense forest and deep ocean, and do not underestimate biodiversity studies. unfortunately not many people respect it especially when people are talking about nano and biotechnology.

Oarfish inhabit the world's oceans but are found in the dark depths between about 600 and 3,000 feet. On the rare occasions one is seen on or near a beach--this happens very rarely and sporadically--it's either sick or injured, dying or already dead.

Ecotoxicology: important course for all so that everybody will have a basic knowledge on hazardous chemicals, its sources, effects on the environment, human or organisms, and their toxicological effects.

Some professors do not give a good lecture notes BUT many professors give a good thought and analysis so that the students can have a good ideas and thinking powers.
