Oil spill enters Malaysian waters

JOHOR BARU: The oil spill caused by a collision involving the tanker, MT Bunga Kelana 3, and bulk carrier MV Waily in the Singapore Strait, about 13km southeast of Changi East last Tuesday, has spread into Malaysian waters.

Johor Department of Environment director Dr Zulkifli Abdul Rahman said the spill measuring 1,600-metre long and 960-metre wide, was now 960 metres from the Tanjung Ayam beach in Pengerang, Kota Tinggi.

"Currently, the Southern Region Marine Department is in the midst of preventing the spill from reaching the beach," he said in a statement here Thursday.

He said the 'boom' or equipment to prevent the spill from spreading had been installed. - Bernama

"The Malaysian-registered tanker MT Bunga Kelana 3 was carrying nearly 62,000 tonnes of crude when it collided Tuesday with the MV Waily, a bulk carrier registered in St Vincent and the Grenadines"

About 2,500 tonnes of crude had leaked from a gash on the double-hulled tanker's port side, port officials said.

Double-hulled tankers are designed to limit spillage in case of a rupture.

"Singapore is one of the world's leading ports, with data from the port authority showing the island-nation handled 472 million tonnes of cargo last year, with bulk oil cargo constituting 37.5 percent of the total"

Harapan Berputik

What Fomer Prime Minister Said about Langkawi

LANGKAWI O' LANGKAWI
By Dr. Mahathir Mohamad on May 17, 2010 5:17 PM

1. I used to sail in the Mediterranean sea and visited the islands there. They were all very bare. There were a few trees growing in between bare rocks.

2. Coming back I appreciated our green islands more. And the greenest of them all (to me at least) is Langkawi.

3. But I am afraid it is getting less and less green now.

4. We like to blame the developers for cutting down the tree. And I think they should be blamed. But in Langkawi we see people, mostly locals I think, who quietly burn down the undergrowth and sometimes the trees as well, so they can plant bananas and other fruit trees. They do this on the hillsides normally.

5. As a result when it rains, muddy water which used to be trapped and the flow slowed by the bushes now come down in torrents.

6. If the hillsides continue to be cleared, there will be landslides soon.

7. A Langkawi that is not green won't be much of an attraction, I think.

8. My blog seems to have some effect. The straightening and widening of the north south highway, as well as the cutting of trees have now stopped. All praise be to Allah. Thank you JKR.

9. I had lunch on the rocks at Tanjung Sanctuary. This is an old hotel but the new owner has completely refurbished. No trees were cutand you pass through a real forest to reach the chalets and the restaurant.

10. I was there when the hotel was started almost 20 years ago. This was my second visit and the ambience is fantastic. Very restful.

11. O Langkawi - may it always be green. In my years as Prime Minister nothing gave me so much pleasure as developing Langkawi. It still gives me the same pleasure.

_______________________________________________

Perhaps all locals need to be educated on the values of Langkawi as an ecotourism attraction and destination. People go to Langkawi not just to buy free duty products but to enjoy nature - trees, cocunuts, corals, beaches and eat seafood. The locals need to promote nature instead cutting trees for "pisang rebus" and ubi bakar" eat with "nyok kukoq". May be UPM (Universiti Putra Malaysia) can help Langkawian together with LADA.

3R - reduce, reuse, recycle

Wajib asingkan sampah menjelang 2013
20/05/2010 3:42pm

- Utusan

PM proposes setting up of 'Clean Energy Development Bank'

KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak has proposed that a “Clean Energy Development Bank” be established to accelerate the development of clean energy-related industries for the benefit of developing countries of the Organisation of the Islamic Conference (OIC).

Speaking at the 6th World Islamic Economic Forum (WIEF) at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre here on Wednesday, the Prime Minister said Malaysia was prepared to spearhead the initiative.

“As clean energy is being pursued by governments and security of energy supply is becoming a priority for countries with few, if any, hydrocarbon resources, there is tremendous potential for the development of alternative energy sources.

“I hope it (proposal) can be discussed during the forum's Special Leadership Dialogue Session on Climate Change,” he said in his keynote address.

Najib, who is the also the WIEF patron, said that as energy security was becoming a pertinent subject today, the green agenda should be made central to policy making

“The current reality must be recognised. We all stand accused of doing too little too late. We need to do more to develop alternative energy sources that address growing requirements and prevent further degradation of the environment,” he said.

Najib said more inter-government collaboration was required to formulate policies and initiate programmes which promoted renewable energy options, such as biofuels.

He said another area to enhance the countries' collective efforts to build strong, sustainable economies and fair, just societies was to strengthen efforts in human resource development, especially in education and training, which in his view, was far from satisfactory.

“No Muslim country can aspire to be a leader in any field without investing in education.”

Hence, Najib proposed that a Specialised Development Fund be established to develop an education infrastructure and support teacher training and academic research.

“Properly structured, managed and utilised, such funds can help reduce the educational gap that exists between the Muslim and non-Muslim world,” he said.

Najib said that as issues faced by the Muslim world were more daunting, the member countries could not afford to be bystanders but should instead embark on a revolution that could ultimately achieve a remarkable transformation in member countries and throughout the Muslim world.-Bernama

Basic research or fundamental research (sometimes pure research) is research carried out to increase understanding of fundamental principles. Many times the end results have no direct or immediate commercial benefits: basic research can be thought of as arising out of curiosity. However, in the long term it is the basis for many commercial products and applied research. Basic research is mainly carried out by universities.

Basic research advances fundamental knowledge about the human world. It focuses on refuting or supporting theories that explain how this world operates, what makes things happen, why social relations are a certain way, and why society changes. Basic research is the source of most new scientific ideas and ways of thinking about the world. It can be exploratory, descriptive, or explanatory; however, explanatory research is the most common. Basic research generates new ideas, principles and theories, which may not be immediately utilized; though are the foundations of modern progress and development in different fields. Today's computers could not exist without the pure research in mathematics conducted over a century ago, for which there was no known practical application at that time. Basic research rarely helps practitioners directly with their everyday concerns. Nevertheless, it stimulates new ways of thinking about deviance that have the potential to revolutionize and dramatically improve how practitioners deal with a problem. A new idea or fundamental knowledge is not generated only by basic research can build new knowledge. Nonetheless, basic research is essential for nourishing the expansion of knowledge. Researchers at the center of the scientific community conduct most of the basic research.

GREEN Campus

We have been talking a lot about acid rain, green house effect, climate change, global warming, green technology, etc.... Who are the best people to respond to these issues if not the educated one. We can start with the green campus; not just the green in colour or full of decorated green plants but the green spirit should be in all individuals. Look at our environment. If we have 30,000 staff and students in one campus, may be we need 60,000 trees with 30 metres tall and 2-3 metres diameter. Do we have this in our campus? If not we must do it now, design, plant them and preserve the existing one. Do not cut any trees as we like. Do we practice recycle papers, how many junk letters/brochures we recieved or produced everyday, how many A4 papers we use everyday, how do we safe our electricity and water bills? How we manage our chemicals from laboratories. How we manage our transport systems in campus? Do we practice green fertiliser. In fact we can have compost centre to process plant materials, food waste and other organic matters for fertiliser to make our trees green and colourful. How we treated our waste water (grease trap? process our waste water? OR our water contain contraceptive pills???). In short University's professors and students must think on how to green the campus and followup by the other staff.

Konflik Realiti kehidupan and Motivasi Remaja

Gambar: Kem Ekologi & Motivasi Angkasawan

Biodiversity in Malaysia

If we want to be champion in biodiversity, field biology or wildlife ecology, we must work on popular subjects in biodiversity, rare subjects or something that other field scientists not focus on OR doing something extreme where no body can do it or like to do it or dare to do it or willing to do it. Malaysia have very good opportunity. The problems are not many young extreme field biologist and not many funding agencies to sponsor this kind of projects. So those who like to sacrifice can try. The rewards may be later......
To encourage young generation in field biology, they need to be exposed to more field works. This need more money in teaching and time/energy/knowledge/experience/skills/etc.... among lecturers.

What does your sleep position reveal about your personality?

by Jessica Ashley, Shine staff, on Mon Apr 26, 2010 12:55pm PDT

Fetus position - A whopping 41% of participants sleep in this curled-up manner. Women are twice as likely to rest like this and it is listed as the most common position. These sleepers are said to have a tough exterior but are still sensitive and may appear to be shy but warm up quickly.
Log position - If you sleep on your side with both arms down, you are a social, easy-going person who is trusting, sometimes to the point of being gullible. The study showed 15% of people sleep like a log.
Yearner position - A close third is the side-lying position with both arms out in front of the body, with 13% of partipants sleeping like this. Yearners are noted to be open-minded and still cynical, suspicious, and stubborn about sticking to decisions once they are made.
Soldier position - These sleepers lie on their backs with arms down and kept close to the body. This 8% study is said to be reserved, quiet, without fuss, and hold themselves and others to a high standard. Soldier sleepers have a higher likelihood for snoring due to the flat-back position, which may not cause them to wake up often but may result in a less restful night's sleep.
Freefall position - Those people who lie on their bellies with arms under or wrapped around a pillow with head turned to the side, make up 7% of the population studied. Freefallers are brash, outgoing, and are very uncomfortable with criticism.
Starfish position - Sleepers who lie on their backs with arms up near their head or the pillow account for 5% of participants. These people are good listeners, helpful, and are uncomfortable being the center of attention. People who sleep in starfish position are more likely to snore and to suffer from a poor night's sleep more often.
