First Lecture BGY3102 Animal Biodiversity

Look at how future One Malaysia sitting in lecture theater

Majority of the students are still like school children eventhough they are already in third semester in UPM. They are not ready with the courses and waiting for lecturer to feed them with synopsis, course content etc. Many of them do not know that all UPM students can plan their time table and courses from the first year. They like to change their time table as they like and not committed to the course. Their attitude still not according to UPM standard. Did they follow "starting schools" ? when they were in the first year. If yes, they did not change and ready to move forwards with UPM. After two semesters in UPM still do not know where are some classroom. So, they missed the english class. My advise, UPM students must realise that they are in UPM and should follow UPM momentum. If we want to be world class and compete with the global market we must change our attitude and work hard. Equipt ourself with knowledge, skills and good attitude. Identify your space in the world after you graduated from UPM.

The biggest problem facing the world is not climate change but inadequate thinking: Edward de Bono.

Edward de Bono's Six Thinking Hats (Feeling, information, Benefits, Judgement, Creativity, and Focus)

The six hats represent six modes of thinking and are directions to think rather than labels for thinking. That is, the hats are used proactively rather than reactively.

Use the Six Thinking Hats to:
Discuss topics
Solve problems
Explore alternatives
Reach decisions
Research, organise and write reports
Brainstorming

The Six Thinking Hats at a glance:

1. White hat thinking identifies the facts and details of a topic

2. Black hat thinking examines the problems associated with a topic
3. Yellow hat thinking focuses on the positive aspects of a topic
4. Red hat thinking looks at a topic from the point of view of emotions and feelings
5. Green hat thinking requires creativeness, imagination and lateral thinking about a topic
6. Blue hat thinking focuses on reflection, metacognition (thinking about the thinking that is required), and the need to understand the big picture

We need knowledge for all these. Without basic knowlegde in specific field we cannot think, argue, understanding the problems and making decision. Those who are able to think logic usually they have very strong basic knowledge. basic knowledge can be obtained through formal learning and experience through their life.

Rethinking Agriculture, a Paradigm Shift: UPMVC

Naib Canselor Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), Prof. Datuk Dr. Nik Mustapha R. Abdullah:
