PETALING JAYA: The Selangor government’s “No Plastic Bag Day” campaign, now held on Saturdays, will be extended to every day of the week starting 2017.
Elizabeth Wong said the state government will couple this with the polystyrene-free containers campaign next year.
“Beginning Jan 1, 2017, all retailers in Selangor will no longer provide polystyrene containers and free single-use plastic bags.
“Local council by-laws have been revised to support this policy and retailers must agree to go plastic-free when applying for or renewing their licences.

Two years a go I proposed to UPM leading in Korea-Asia disruptive Innovation technology in Malaysia BUT we do not see the future. We like to be the follower and celebrating our achievement as recognised by the developed countries. We should change according to the current trends of science and technologies. Change our style of thinking, style of our behaviour, style of administration and mind set. Our leaders need to be more free, creative, brave and innovative.

I still remember over 16 years a go we have an expedition to Wang Kelian Perlis to document biodiversity at the reserve forest. If we do not have detail about flora and fauna in the reserve forest, very difficult to defense in case the government approve development in the area. Reserve forest need to be preserved for future biodiversity, water and climate. ALL for future generations.

Still on plastic bag issue: We can argue on all aspects that we want politic, economy, social, environment etc. BUT the main problem must be address first ie. environmental and health issues. Think how to solve it before too late.

KUALA LUMPUR 23 Jan.
- UTUSAN ONLINE

How to manage plastic bags at home and landfill sites? We need to work hard to change our mind set and life style from public to politician. We are going to live in developed country so we must change our thinking and life style. Leave primitive way of life behind and make it as a history of our life.

Japan streets ahead in global plastic recycling race: Are we going to politicise the plastic issues in our country OR we want to let our future generations inherit the effect of plastic contamination.
Japan is one of the most successful countries in the world for recycling plastics. In 2010, 77% of plastic waste was recycled, up from 73% in 2006 and 39% in 1996, according to the nation's Plastic Waste Management Institute.
The country has passed several recycling laws to address the disposal and treatment of plastic waste since 1997, when businesses and consumers were obliged to separate plastic waste for the first time.

At 77%, Japan's plastic recycling rate is about twice that of the UK, and well above the 20% figure for the US, which still depends largely on landfill, according to institute spokesman Takushi Kamiya.

Alhamdulliah after retired I still move around to give talk on biodiversity and pollution. This is part of my ideas to serve the academic community in my field. Government should take the opportunity to use all the retired professors to continue serving the academic community. We don't have to pay them but just to sponsor their time and millage. We don't have to pay them high if we don't have the money. BUT we cannot sacrifice their knowledge and experience if they are strong and willing.
Malaysia is also famous with important sites for migratory shore birds. Migratory bird from northern hemisphere migrate south to escape from cold weather. Malaysian must know this and together with naturalist and birds lovers to protect all stop over sites and roosting sites for migratory birds. Malaysian Government is supporting now BUT we still have gaps at the local community, local authority and local agencies.
Another contribution in conserving nature, creating natural environment and educating public old and new generation. Commitment and government intention to develop this Taman Tugu should be supported by all. I really hope the planner and the developers are really understand the concept of rain forest and their ecology. They must consult the right person and experts in the process of planning and developing it. This project is for lonf term and may be permanent, so the good planning is very important.
Government promise to keep 50% of the country covered by forests is not now but long tome a go. But the deforestation in this country keep continue. We need to work hard to educate the public, policy maker, the politician and the greedy business community. Keeping natural forest is for long term benefit to the country either local community or the country as the whole and including the world climate. All Malaysiian and the Government must understand the important of nature and committed in protecting and conserving nature. Not just protecting but understanding why protecting and conserving nature. For examplwe for pharmaceutical, agriculture, tourism and wildlife conservation.
Changing people's mind set, behaviour and thinking is not a ceremonial but a continuous effort. We have to use all opportunities including media. This time talking about plastic contamination and landfill sites. Plastic is a global issues. All must take part and understand about plastic as a pollutant and how to manage it.

Bang plastic issue still hot in the main stream media, both electronic and printed media. For me public must understand why and ready to change. The government must educate public sistematically and aggressively. Public must understand and support this NO plastic bags campaign. Plastic caused health and environmental effect to human and it is very costly to solve the problems later.

The pictures below were taken in 2013 at Sungai Halong Belum-Temenggor. Very interesting place that we need to protect and conserve for national heritage and nature conservation. We failed to convince the politician and the public because lack of data and reasoning. We need more research. Time is against us, we are facing greedy business man and poachers. All levels must be educated. NGO must be more aggressive and more experts should be involved.
A recent report on 50 countries showed that while Malaysia was one of the TOPspenders on higher education, it was one of the weakest in terms of research output, institutional ranking, enrolment and employability.. We can allocate more money for infrastructure and facilities including scholarship for students BUT IF we cannot retain good professors we will have less academic culture in the university and produce low quality graduates

In fact, the agenda in managing university finances is soIMPORTANT that the ministry came up with another document called the University Transformation Programme – also known as the Purple Book- to assist public universities in creating and implementing their own tailored transformations to ensure long term financial sustainability.
We need to do a lot of campaign if we really do not want to us plastic bags in daily life. In England some supermarket try to stop BUT until now some still using it. Many of them are using shopping bags. Going to supermarket is not for sightseeing but planned for shopping. So we must bring our own shopping bags or any type of containers. You can push ythe troly to the car or taxi.

A lot of sciences involves in sports. If we want to be champion sports is not only game and win (and probably corruption and gambling) but science. The players and coaches must know science. mathematics, physic and biology.
