Orangutans may lose nearly all their tropical forest habitat within 15 years unless urgent action is taken now to end rampant illegal logging, the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) warned.
Release in the wild may cost a lot, high risk and not promise the success. Therefore conservaton in their natural habitat should be the priority.
And rather than duplicating ongoing – and world-renowned – orang utan conservation efforts in Sabah and Sarawak, shouldn’t we instead concentrate on actual conservation work to preserve species found in the peninsular and which are facing graver threats, such as the Sumatran rhinoceros, Tapir, Sun bear, Hornbills and Malayan tiger?
