Malaysia is one of the important maritime countries in the world. The Straits of Malacca and the South China Sea are important shipping routes in the world connecting east and west. Those Straits of Malacca and South China Sea are also important to their biodiversity including fishing industries. Looking at those angle, Malaysia as a maritime country, therefore marine sciences are very important fields, not just in biology and oceanography but in military and defense systems too. Malaysia need to have an experts and research facilities related to marine ecosystems. Existing facilities need to be upgraded urgently and seniour marine scientists need to be asked to lead in building the capacity in marine scientists. A special research and training grants need to be provided by the government immediately if we do not want to be left behind by our neighboring countries.
Continuous training for young scientists needed. We do not have good seniour marine scientists around now. So the urgency in marine sciences training and research are needed.
